What Is Testimonial?

A customer endorsement — typically longer and more narrative than a review — used in marketing materials to build trust.

A testimonial is a customer endorsement that describes their positive experience with a product or service. Unlike standard reviews (which are typically short and posted on third-party platforms), testimonials are curated statements used in marketing materials, on websites, and in sales collateral.

Types of Testimonials

Quote Testimonials — Short text quotes, often with a headshot, name, and title. Most common format.

Video Testimonials — Recorded customer stories. Higher production value, higher trust, higher engagement. Can increase landing page conversions by up to 80%.

Case Study Testimonials — In-depth stories with problem, solution, and results. Best for B2B and high-value sales.

Social Media Testimonials — Screenshots of organic praise on Twitter, LinkedIn, or Instagram. Feel authentic because they weren't solicited.

Influencer Testimonials — Endorsements from recognized industry figures. High impact but may lack perceived authenticity.

Best Practices for Collecting Testimonials

  • Ask at peak satisfaction — Right after a successful project, major milestone, or support resolution
  • Provide a framework — Give customers a structure: "What was the problem? How did we help? What were the results?"
  • Make it easy — Offer to draft based on their notes, then have them approve
  • Get permission — Always get written consent to use their name, photo, and company
  • Include specifics — "Increased conversions by 34%" is more powerful than "great product"
  • Keep them fresh — Rotate testimonials and update with recent ones regularly
